Visualizing Indigenous Florida

SPRING 2024

HIS 4936/ANT 4931 - 11 Undergraduate Students

AMH 5934 - 4 Graduate Students

The Indigenous history of our region is little known by the public. Rumors and inaccuracies about in local museums, parks, and classrooms, despite a rich and active scholarship on the Mocamas, Yamasees, and Guales and their ancestors. A particular source of misinformation is a series of late sixteenth-century engravings created a Flemish engraver (Theodor deBry) of local Timucua-speaking Mocamas. These largely fictionalized images are still used by museums, educators, and even scholars--despite their serious problems. Using historical and archaeological materials, we will critique roughly ten of these engravings and partner with Indigenous artists to produce new open-source images. We will make those images and our critiques available on our Digital Humanities site, Indigenous Florida.
